Today we announce our new partnership with SOCCER.COM, the largest soccer retailer in the world. While January 31st marks the start of our exciting partnership, my path first crossed with SOCCER.COM 31 years ago.
My first job after college was as a Promotions & Team Sales Manager at Lanzera, an American soccer manufacturer. The allegiance between Lanzera and SOCCER.COM was a natural one as both companies were start-ups owned by brothers fueled by a deep rooted, life-long passion for the game. The Milone brothers from Lanzera and the Moylan brothers from EUROSPORT (now SOCCER.COM) were friends and colleagues.
I remember meeting Mike & Brendan Moylan for the first time at the United Soccer Coaches Convention in 1994 and being struck by their business acumen and deeply rooted passion for the game. The impressive trajectory of SOCCER.COM growth has been fueled by this passion.
Originally branded as EUROSPORT, a mail order catalog of soccer equipment, the Moylan’s successfully tapped into the emerging soccer market of the post 1994 World Cup. Their catalog was both a means of buying gear and a pipeline for educating a young soccer nation about the game. It told stories about professional players around the world, informed us of international competitions, opened the door to a deeper understanding of the global nature of the game, and gave an account of many of our American players and National teams. I used to sit down with a cup of coffee to “read” the catalog!
In 1994, the internet was slowly emerging and Mike and Brendan Moylan claiming the SOCCER.COM URL seemed more confusing to me than a brilliant business move. I remember Lanzera staff having a conversation about owning Lanzera.com, as if it was a marketing move worthy of question and discussion!
Today, thirty-one years later, Mike, Brendan and the SOCCER.COM family they have grown are some of my favorite people to spend time with at soccer events. United by a tremendous passion for growing the game, SOCCER.COM is always the life of the party (or throwing the party) and brings the soccer community together in special ways.
Personally, I am excited to see my relationship with Mike and Brendan formalized after all these years and look forward to collaborating with the staff at SOCCER.COM to make youth soccer better. Our partnership will mutually support the companies utilizing promotions such as bonus’ for SOCCER.COM clubs, discounted individual memberships to parents, shared content, and various events throughout the year.
